Last year, RWS donated 2 large art posters to help fundraise for the film “A Life Less Empty”, a feature length film by Rueben MartellNadya is excited to take on the role of Director of Photography, working alongside Producer/ Writer/ Director Rueben Martell. The production is coming together with filming commencing in May 2010 (next month) and is anticipated to be released January or February 2011.

Produced by Chelsa Riel and Rueben Martell, “A Life Less Empty” is a contemporary Native love story that focuses on the life of Simon, a Native man stuck in a life on the reserve that’s become comfortable. The every day life is him dealing with his friend’s problems and troubles, giving no time to him dealing with his own demons. When he meets Karen, a university student bent on making her life better, he sees that it is possible to make the transition from being without hope, to making things better for himself and the people around him.

The film stars: Nathaniel Arcand, Brandy Seenie, Dakota House, Lorne Cardinal, and Matthew Strongeagle

    Special Fundraiser Auction:

RWS strongly believes in supporting Native artists & endeavours whenever possible, and is hosting two auctions for the donated posters. All proceeds from both auctions Auction 1, and Auction 2 will go towards the production of the film. For updates visit A Life Less Empty on Facebook.

Last week, Nadya met with some CBC TV crew for an interview about what it means to be Native and living in a city, such as Toronto. The series of vignettes features urban Aboriginals from across Canada, and originally aired on Tuesday’s episode of Connect with Mark Kelley, April 6th.

    Runtime: 3:06 mins

The features, including some coverage on The National, were launched with the Urban Aboriginal Peoples Study; “researchers interviewed 2,614 status and non-status First Nations, Métis and Inuit people in 11 cities across Canada: Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Regina, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Thunder Bay, Ont., Montreal, Toronto, Halifax and Ottawa (Inuit only), between March and October 2009. The study was launched to examine “the attitudes of native Canadians who call the city home.” For more information about the Urban Aboriginal Peoples Study, visit: www.cbc.ca

"Concrete Indians" Series - Tee Lyn Copenace

"Concrete Indians" Series - Tee Lyn Copenace, Spadina Station, Toronto ON

Since its first inception in May 2008, the response to this series has been overwhelming; Native people from across Turtle Island have been submitting their ideas regarding what it means to be urbanized and how living in urban centers either strengthens or weakens (or both) ones own cultural identity.

The concept is “Urban Indian” and “Native Identity”. Rather than the photographer be the source of ideas through which the concept is explored, YOU share what it means to you by submitting a ► photo idea.

The series is cinematic, all images are converted to large-scale black & white portraits, and will also be launched as a travelling exhibit visiting reservations/ reserves, and cities throughout Canada and U.S.A.

RWS randomly gives a poster to one lucky fan every time the fanbase bridges the 1000 mark on both Facebook and Twitter.  The giveaway hasn’t really picked up speed on Twitter, but the Facebook fanbase is currently at 3400 and steadily rising.  Now well past the 3000 mark, RWS friend Lisa Charleyboy randomly selected a winner from the fanbase pool last month, but unfortunately the last winner hasn’t claimed her prize.

True to our committment to RWS fans, Nadya is hosting a contest for this large 24 x 36 inch Black & White image, shot in northern Ontario in January, 2007.   The answer to the contest question can be found on this website, so start searching our posts and pages for your chance to win!

Contest closes Monday, April 12 at 1:00pm

The winner will be announced in the Spring Edition of the RWS Newsletter to subscribers later this month. Haven’t signed up yet? Join the Mailing List/ Newsletter for special announcements & quarterly Newsletter updates:
